A Stone's Throw
Goal
New school year, new challenge and the 2016-2017 TLA did not disappoint. EMIT students were asked to place themselves in an unconventional situation. Years into the future they are shrunken, thrown back in time, and brought to a strange place by omnipotent beings who are only referred to as The Q. To return home each team must build an Efficient Method of Intense Throwing apparatus. That's not all, each team is limited to the use of one of two materials, wood or PVC. Following the building process, the machines were put to the test. The machines had to launch projectiles of varying weights to see who best fulfilled the requirements. A peculiar task, but challenging nonetheless. The students researched simple machines, the physics and mathematics behind the success, and the history of throwing mechanisms.
Outcome
The year 2016-2017 was a very successful year for EMIT’s TLA projects. Students brought their ideas to life by designing, creating, and testing their visions of an advanced throwing apparatus. The designs the students chose to use were primarily based on the catapult, trebuchet, ballistic, and a sling shot mechanism. In all of our amazement the top three teams went the distance of 300-500 meters when the expected was a mere 50-100 meters! However every team did their part in defeating the Q!
